How do I know if I have the right therapist?

I offer a free discovery call so that we can both learn about each other and make sure we’re well suited — please email me to get started. Following that, the best way to make sure you have the right therapist is to have a few sessions. Those first few sessions as a way for us to get to know each other and work together to identify areas you’d like help with. This period isn’t only a chance to for me to learn about you — it’s a time for you to get to know me, as well, and to make sure the fit feels right.

The right therapist for you is someone you feel like you could open up to, and someone who feels like they get you. People don’t always feel safe with a therapist right away — this makes sense, since it’s self-protective. But if you have the sense that you could feel safe with them if you got to know them better, that’s a step in the right direction. The right therapist is someone who helps you feel heard and understood, and who helps you articulate what’s going on that you’d like to change or understand more deeply, and help you figure out how to move forward.

How do I know if I have the right couples therapist?

The same ideas apply. Hopefully you feel that the therapist understood where you were both coming from, and can help you identify what issues you’re having in the moment. You both feel this is someone who could come to get what you’re about as a couple, or how you wish things were different.

How long does therapy take?

In terms of the length of treatment, the frustrating answer is that it depends — it depends on what you’re dealing with, how long it’s been a problem, and what else in your life is going on. Individual therapy sessions are held once or twice weekly for 50 minutes, and couples therapy sessions are usually held once weekly for 50 minutes, although there are times when it makes sense to meet more often.

Do you take insurance?

I am considered an “out-of-network” provider. I will provide you with a monthly receipt that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement if you have out-of-network benefits or a flexible spending account, often called an FSA.

To understand more about your insurance, call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask about the following:

    • Do I have out-of-network behavioral health benefits?

    • What are my out-of-network behavioral health benefits?

    • What is my out-of-network deductible, and has it been met?

    • Do I have a co-pay or co-insurance? If so, how much is it?

    • Is there a limit to the number of visits I can have per calendar year?

    • Do I need prior authorization to visit a behavioral health care professional?

How do I start therapy?

Feel free to call, text, or email me letting me know you’d like to connect. If you’re struggling to find the words, feel free put “Therapy” in the subject and send this message: “Hi, I’m interested in therapy. Please let me know how to move forward with a discovery call.”

I look forward to hearing from you.
